FAQ

Enviroforensic & Geoscience Services, Inc. (EGS) employs a holistic approach to reconstructing past events and assists with answering questions such as:

What contaminant(s) were discharged into the environment?

Contaminant plumes change through time - weathering causes their chemical profile to look different as they age! Identifying the original contaminants is key in making proper remedial decisions and for providing litigation or cost recovery support.

How long ago the discharge event occurred?

EGS has a thorough understanding of age dating models, their benefits and limitations, and the historical context of contaminants (e.g., why and when select contaminants first impacted specific geographic localities). We also develop specialized forensic programs to date contaminant releases when subsurface conditions or site use history limit standard approaches and provide key information for cases involving different contaminant classes.

Was the release catastrophic (a single sudden event) or chronic (continuous through time)?

This type of information is commonly used in insurance coverage queries. Forensic profiling is useful for estimating the discharge duration. Dr. Anton co-authored a technical paper concerning this matter (see publications).

Were there multiple discharge events?

We can answer that question because we have ways to make contaminants "talk"! Understanding the chemical nature of the plume yields a wealth of useful information.

Can forensic services assist with cost recovery?

Compasses point to magnetic north. Plume migration and chemistry point back to where and when contaminants originate. If you have spent money towards cleaning up a plume that was not entirely your responsibility, then having forensic data to document that is an integral component of successful cost recovery efforts.
